Abuse reporting guide

How to report phishing to a hosting or network provider

A useful abuse report identifies the provider's role and gives reproducible evidence. A vague accusation or domain name alone often produces a dead end.

Map the role before choosing the recipient

A domain can involve a registrar, DNS provider, reverse proxy, website host, mail sender and redirect service. The company visible in DNS may not store the page. Send each recipient the facts connected to the service it actually provides.

Preserve the original message

Keep the .eml file or raw source, its received time, Message-ID, sender fields and authentication results. Record a cryptographic hash if the case may change hands. Redact unrelated personal material only after preserving an intact source.

Describe the exact abusive object

For a web report, include the full URL, observation time with time zone, response code and redirect destination. Add provider identifiers such as a request or Ray ID when available. For a mail report, include the relevant headers and envelope information.

State the behaviour, not an unsupported identity

Explain what the page or message asks the recipient to do and which brand or account it imitates. Separate direct observations from inferences. Avoid naming a person unless independent records support that attribution.

Track and supplement

Keep the case number, submission time and response. If the provider cannot locate the content, reply to the existing case with the missing exact URL or observation details. Repeating the same incomplete report adds volume without improving the evidence.

Action checklist

  1. Name the exact service and technical role the provider controls.
  2. Include the exact object, UTC observation and response evidence.
  3. Keep the case number and supplement the same case when possible.
A screenshot is useful context but does not contain the complete delivery evidence. Keep the .eml file or raw source when the decision matters.

Questions people ask

Why did a provider say it could not find the page?

The report may have contained only a hostname, the page may have moved, or the provider may serve a different technical role. Add exact observations to the existing case.

Should I send the same report to every provider?

No. Use a shared evidence base, then tailor each packet to the recipient's role and requested channel.
